CHILDREN’S AWARD-WINNING BOOKS DONATED TO TUCSON SCHOOLS.  WILPF, through its
educational affiliate, the Jane Addams Peace Association, has each year since 1953, selected
outstanding children’s books for use in our communities. The panel guidelines include: promote the cause
of peace, social justice, world community and equality of the sexes and all races, as well as meeting
conventional standards for excellence. This past year our Branch bought two sets of six books and
donated one set each to the Hohokam Middle School library and the recently inaugurated Pima County
Juvenile Detention Center library.  We encourage you to read about these excellent books via the JAPA
web site: www.janeaddamspeace.org.

KUDOS TO ELENA SATTEN-LOPEZ!!  WILPF is proud of our summer intern Elena Satten-Lopez who
brightened our lives and accomplished much in her short time with us.  She added color and meaningful
content to our WILPF Tucson web site, did important research (with Susan Thorpe) for Pan Left’s coming
documentary on Sheriff Arpaio, and enabled a very successful Open Mic program August 14 in support of
Raza Studies at TUSD.  She is already a Woman Making Waves.  We wish her well as she returns to
Haverford, and thank her for her hard work and caring nature.

GRANNIES & FRIENDS COMMEMORATED HIROSHIMA-NAGASAKI TRAGEDIES  August 8, the Tucson
Raging Grannies and traveling WILPF members (from Washington D.C.) Ellen Thomas and Jay Marx

Joseph Rotblat, nuclear scientist who resigned from the Manhattan Project for conscience reasons and
started the first anti-nuclear movement of scientists against the bomb) contact Pat at
